The Ruby Lotus parure was made for Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna in 1874 by jeweler Bolin. This ornate set, which included a tiara, necklace, and devant de corsage, was given to Tsar Alexander II and his first wife Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna's only surviving daughter upon her marriage to Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The collection is created with diamonds halo surrounding a motif of lotus flowers made from Burmese rubies.

Their daughter, Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, inherited the ruby parure, which had originally belonged to Maria Alexandrovna. The eldest sister of the current Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, was Princess Margarita of Greece, to whom Princess Alexandra later bequeathed the parure.

Princess Margarita wore the tiara to many important events, such as Princess Sofia of Greece and Juan Carlos of Spain's 1962 nuptials. It is assumed that the tiara belonged to her children after her death in 1981; they subsequently chose to auction it off in 1989.
